About

Ramon van Merkenstein is a Dutch double bassist, composer and bandleader living in Brussels. His music combines groove, narrative composition and improvisation, drawing inspiration from jazz traditions as well as rock, experimental and contemporary influences. At the heart of his work lies a search for music that tells stories and transcends boundaries: soundscapes that balance recognition and surprise, inviting audiences into a space of connection. Known for his radiant tone and imaginative interaction with fellow musicians, Ramon creates concerts that feel alive, layered and full of unexpected turns.

Since graduating in 2017 with a Master’s degree in Jazz Double Bass from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Ramon has established himself as a versatile and distinctive voice in the Belgian and international jazz scene.

With his Ramon van Merkenstein Trio – featuring guitarist Gabriele di Franco and drummer Lieven Venken – he released Quiet Dreams (2021, Homerecords) and Waiting for a Summer Storm (2024, Challenge Records). Both albums received praise from Le Soir, Jazz’halo, Jazz&Mo’ and international media in the Netherlands and Germany. The extensive release tours further cemented the trio’s reputation as a strong and engaging live band.

Beyond his trio, Ramon works as a sideman in diverse settings, collaborating with artists such as American crooner Tom McGuire, the international Archipélagos project led by Italian drummer Francesca Remigi, and rising saxophone talent Lucas Bakker. These collaborations reflect his openness and reinforce his growing network.
